Long Term
The Delta Conveyance Project (DCP), commonly referred to as the tunnel project, is a proposed project to modernize the State Water Project (SWP) infrastructure in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Delta). The DCP adds a new point of diversion along the Sacramento River to operate in conjunction with existing facilities of the SWP, a critical component of the Mojave Water Agency’s water supply. The reliability of our imported water supply from the SWP is extremely vulnerable to challenges facing the system today and in the future:
- Sea level rise driven by climate change
- Levee failure as a result of earthquake
- More restrictive operational criteria in the South Delta
Without investment in our aging SWP infrastructure, we can expect imported water supply reliability for the High Desert and much of California to decline over time. The purpose of the proposed DCP is to modernize the aging SWP infrastructure in the Delta to restore and protect the reliability of our precious imported water supply in a cost-effective manner.
