Algal Bloom Information
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) have become a recurring and escalating issue both globally and within California due to associated adverse health effects on humans and animals, as well as the recognition that toxin-producing cyanobacterial blooms can impact water quality and beneficial uses such as drinking, fishing, and water contact recreation.
To increase general awareness around HABs across the state, The Departmnet of Water Resources utilizes several strategies. First, DWR staff posts general awareness signs at waterbodies year-round, so the public knows what to look for when recreating. Since DWR cannot be present at all sites, these signs help provide on-the-ground information. DWR also shares resources on websites and through news articles.
